Learning Disabilities and Autism
Learning Outcomes:
To ensure staff working in health and social care receive learning disability and autism training, at the right level for their role to promote the best outcomes for patients
Aims:
To enhance understanding of learning disabilities and autism within the dental setting, supporting dental teams to considering individual needs, adapt their approach, and provide safe, respectful and person-centred care
Objectives:
Describe characteristics of learning disabilities and autism, and understand how these may influence communication, behaviour and engagement
Recognise the diverse needs and experiences of individuals
Reflect on insights shared through videos from people with lived experience, gaining a deeper understanding of their thoughts, feelings and perspectives to inform empathetic practice
Consider strategies to improve communication and reduce barriers to care, promoting confidence, comfort and positive outcomes for autistic individuals and those with learning disabilities.
